FAQ

Q: If a model has a special rule that states it must Charge when it Moves if able, can it choose not to Move and therefore not to Change? (Rules Manual, p.28)

A: No. The model will still follow all the steps of the Activation Phase, the second of which is Start of Move. If at this stage the model could Charge, it must do so.

Q: If a model has a rule that means it must Charge, are they forced to attempt Jump, Leap, Climb or Swim tests in order to attempt to meet the necessary conditions of the rule that is causing them to do so? Additionally, are they required to spend Might or re-roll these tests if they are able to Charge and would otherwise be unable to? (Rules Manual, p.28)

A: No to both.

Q: Do wings, weapons, banners and other wargear count as part of a model for the purposes of determining if an In The Way Test is required? (Rules Manual, p.41)

A: No. Just as those same elements do not count for the purposes of Line of Sight, they do not count when determining if an In the Way Test is required.

Q: Can a model Make Way into a Control Zone? (Rules Manual, p.51)

A: Yes.

Q: If a model forgoes its Activation as part of a Heroic Move, does it skip taking a Courage Test for being part of a Broken Army? (Rules Manual, p.60)

A: No.

Q: Can Beast models try to uncover Artefacts? (Rules Manual, p.65)

A: No.

Q: If a Hero dismounts for whatever reason, and that Hero has selected multiple pieces of wargear, are they forced to discard chosen wargear if there is no legal model to represent the model on foot in the same manner as a Warrior? (Rules Manual, p.69)

A: No. Hero models are exempt from this rule.

Q: The rules state that when a model Dismounts, it discards any wargear it is carrying that is not represented on the official dismounted model. What happens if the dismounted model has wargear that the mounted model didn't have? For example, if a Mirkwood Elf Knight Dismounts, the dismounted models (Mirkwood Elf Warriors) all have options the Knight does not. (Rules Manual, p.69)

A: In rare cases like this, the dismounted model gains wargear so it can be accurately represented by the model. In cases where multiple options are available, you must choose the option that sees the fewest pieces of wargear gained and choose the wargear that is the cheapest in points cost. For example, in the case of the Mirkwood Elf Knight, it would Dismount and be represented by a Mirkwood Elf Warrior with a shield, as that is the option worth the fewest points - we presume the warrior found a discarded shield on the battlefield. In the given example, you cannot use a model with an Elf bow or Elven Glaive as they both cost more than a shield.

Q: If a Cavalry model had charged, fought and became Unengaged, and is subsequently Charged, does it maintain the Cavalry Charge Bonuses? (Rules Manual, p.72)

A: Yes, so long as they still meet all of the conditions listed under Cavalry Charge on page 72.

Q: Can models benefitting from a successful Heroic Combat dismount, make Jump, Leap, Climb or Swim Tests, or pick up objects as part of this additional move? (Rules Manual, p.81)

A: Yes to all.

Q: If a Hero is involved in a Heroic Challenge against a Hero with the Survival Instinct special rule and causes a Wound that results in the Hero being removed as a casualty due to a failed Courage test as per the Survival Instinct special rule, does the Hero gain 1 Might Point for slaying their target? (Rules Manual, p.84)

A: Yes, as the other Hero involved in the Heroic Challenge caused the Wound that forced the Hero with Survival Instincts to flee - a sure sign of victory!

Q: If a model fighting a Monster is being Supported by a model with a pike, who is then themselves being Supported by another model with a pike, and the Monster slays the model it is in Combat with, does the Monster get to make its free Strike on each of the pikes that were Supporting? (Rules Manual, p.89)

A: Yes.

Q: If a Monster wins a Duel Roll whilst Prone, can they still use Brutal Power Attacks? (Rules Manual, p.90)

A: No, it will simply stand up as normal

Q: If a model charges a War Beast and is subsequently slain, or otherwise removed from Combat, before the War Beast Activates, do they count towards the total Strength needed to prevent the War Beast from Trampling? (Rules Manual, p.94)

A: No, only models who have Charged and are still Engaged in Combat with the War Beast when it would Activate count towards the total Strength. Note that models are not paired off into Combats until the Fight Phase. So, charging models that are Engaged in Combat with a War Beast will not remove them from that Combat during the Activation Phase, and therefore the Strength of these models is still taken into account when determining if a War Beast can Trample.

Q: If a Chariot is wounded by something that would kill it instantly (such as a direct hit from a Siege Engine, or the King of the Dead's Drain Soul special rule), and the Chariot is being ridden by a Hero, are any Hero models riding the Chariot also killed instantly? (Rules Manual, p.101)

A: No. In these instances, any Hero models will be affected as described in the second paragraph on page 101.

Q: The rules for Supporting say that the model contributes a single dice to the Duel Roll that uses the Supporting model's own Fight Value; is this used to determine the highest Fight Value in the Combat? (Rules Manual, p.104)

A: Yes. If the Supporting model has the highest Fight Value of models contributing dice to the Duel Roll, then that model's side will win the Combat.

Q: Can a banner be passed to a model that was Engaged in the same Combat as the model equipped with the banner? (Rules Manual, p.108)

A: No. However, it would be able to be passed to a model that was Supporting, as they were not Engaged in the Combat.

Q: If a model wearing the One Ring is Moving as a part of a friendly Hero model's Heroic Move or Heroic March and rolls a 1 or 2 for Sauron's Will, meaning they will Move under the control of the opposing player, do they still need to finish within 6" of the Hero that declared the heroic action? (Rules Manual, p.111)

A: No.

Q: Can a model under the effects of the Paralyse Magical Power pass on a banner when they are slain? (Rules Manual, p.118)

A: Yes. Think of it as a friendly model reaching down to snatch up the banner to keep it aloft, rather than the paralysed model passing it along.

Q: If a model with the Fearful special rule wishes to Charge a model with the Terror special rule, how many Courage Tests does it need to take? (Rules Manual, p.124 & 130)

A: Two, one for each special rule that requires a Courage Test.

Q: If a Cavalry model with the Monstrous Charge special rule Charges into Combat, do they gain +1 Attack or +2? (Rules Manual, p.128)

A: They will gain +1 Attack; the two special rules do not stack.

Q: If a Monster with the Monstrous Charge special rule Charges into Combat and is later Knocked Prone, by the Sorcerous Blast Magical Power for example, does it still increase its Attacks and knock enemy models prone if it wins the Combat? (Rules Manual, p.128)

A: Yes.

Q: Do models with Monstrous Charge still knock to the ground if they are using a Brutal Power Attack? (Rules Manual, p.128)

A: Yes. Note that while a Monster that uses the Rend Brutal Power Attack makes a number of To Wound Rolls equal to its Attacks characteristic (including any modifiers to its Attacks) against a nominated model, they do not make Strikes so will not double the number of Strikes they make against a Prone target.

Q: If a Cavalry model has the Spectral Walk special rule, do they gain the charge bonuses when charging into Difficult Terrain? (Rules Manual, p.129)

A: Yes.

Q: If a model that is benefitting from the Shieldwall special rule is knocked Prone due to a Cavalry Charge, will they still benefit from the Shieldwall special rule for the duration of that Combat? (Rules Manual, p.129)

A: Yes as the special rule states that the benefit of +1 Defence is calculated before models Back Away.

Q: If a special rule says that all models in the army gain the Woodland Creature or Mountain Dweller special rule, does this apply to both the Mount and the rider? (Rules Manual, p.131)

A: Yes.

Q: What happens if two models that are carrying a Heavy Object together need to take a Jump, Leap, Climb or Swim Test? (Rules Manual, p.134)

A: In these instances, once both models are in the relevant position, make a single roll for the required test and apply the result to both models. They may then continue their Activation as normal.

Q: How many Heavy Objects can a Monster model or a model with the Burly special rule carry at one time? (Rules Manual, p.134)

A: Only one at a time.

Q: Can Objective Markers, or Markers that are placed as part of a model's special rule - such as the Vine Marker from the Writhing Vines Magical Power or the Marker placed as part of the 'Invoke the Bruinen' special rule in the Rivendell Army List - be placed underneath the bases of other models? (Rules Manual, p.157)

A: No.

Q: Objective Markers state that a model cannot finish its Move overlapping them. Is this also true for Markers that are placed as part of a model's special rule - such as the Vine Markers from the Writhing Vines Magical Power or the Marker placed as part of the Invoke the Bruinen special rule in the Rivendell Army List? (Rules Manual, p.157)

A: No, models may Move over these Markers and end overlapping them, unless otherwise specified. However, as many of these Markers are required to be removed at the end of a specific Phase, players will need to be careful when removing them so that they do not move models overlapping them from their original position.

Q: If a single model is within range of multiple Objective Markers, can it control more than one at once? (Rules Manual, p.157)

A: Yes.

Q: Can a Mount with the Hero keyword be chosen as an opponent's target in Fog of War Scenarios? (Rules Manual, p.167)

A: No. Or should we say, nay.

Q: In Scenarios where Objective Markers can be carried, how do you measure from the Objective Marker for any special rules that come into play for being within X" of an Objective Marker, such as the Besiegers of the Hornburg Army's The Promise of Wealth special rule? (Matched Play Guide, p.13)

A: Measure from the base of the model carrying the Objective Marker instead of the Objective Marker.

Q: In Scenarios that require you to know which model has the highest points cost, how do you determine which model that is if you have multiple models that are tied for highest cost? What happens if they only have one model who is their General? (Matched Play Guide, p.15)

A: If a player's army contains two or more models that tie for the highest points cost, then they must select one of those models before the game begins to be the 'most expensive' for the duration of the Scenario and ensure that choice is clear and obvious for their opponent. If a player only has a single model in their army, meaning the model with the highest points cost within the army would also be its General, the General will count as the 'most expensive' for the purposes of Victory Points.

Q: In Scenarios that award Victory Points for killing the most expensive model, what happens if the most expensive model was part of a pair or a group, such as Shank & Wrot, Orc Scavengers? (Matched Play Guide, p.16-39)

A: In these instances, all models that are part of the points cost will need to be killed in order to score the Victory Points. So in the example of Shank & Wrot, Orc Scavengers, the player would need to kill Shank, Wrot, and the Snow Troll to score the relevant Victory Points.

Q: Will a Mount with the Hero keyword that has been slain give up Victory Points in Scenarios that award Victory Points for killing enemy Hero models? (Matched Play Guide, p.17)

A: No.

Q: In the Reconnoitre Scenario, if a Hero with the Dominant (X) special rule escapes the board, we know it counts as X number of models for the purpose of working out how many individual models have escaped the board, but does it also count as X Hero models for the purpose of Victory Points? (Matched Play Guide, p.20)

A: No, it will still be a single Hero model. So, if a Hero with Dominant (3) escaped the board in this instance, it would count as 3 models for the number of individual models that have escaped, but only a single Hero model for the criteria outlined in the second bullet point of Scoring Victory Points.

Q: In the Reconnoitre Scenario, does a Mount with the Hero keyword count towards the number of Hero models that have escaped the board when determining Victory Points for bullet point 2 under Scoring Victory Points? (Matched Play Guide, p.20)

A: No.

Q: In the Reconnoitre Scenario, what happens if all of the models in my army gain the Dominant (X) special rule, but some of my models have already left the battlefield? Would those who have already left gain the Dominant (X) special rule, too? (Matched Play Guide, p.20)

A: No, once a model has left the battlefield, it would no longer be affected by new rules introduced to the army. Using the Fords of Isen army as an example, the 'Resolute Rohirrim' special rule grants all models in the army the Dominant (2) special rule once the army becomes Broken. Any models that escaped the board before the army became Broken would not benefit from the special rule, whereas any models that escaped the board after the army became Broken would benefit from being Dominant (2). In the case of models gaining the Dominant (X) special rule, it is vitally important that you, and your opponent, are clearly aware of which models had Dominant (X) and which ones did not, to ensure that you are able to calculate Victory Points accurately. If there is any discrepancy as to how many models had the Dominant (X) special rule when determining Victory Points, it is best to assume the lesser amount.

Q: Can a Mount with the Hero keyword be nominated in Scenarios like Fog of War or Assassination? (Matched Play Guide, p.21 & 26)

A: No.

Q: In the Contest of Champions Scenario, what happens if the Hero is chosen to be the Champion, and that Hero does not normally deploy at the start of the game, such as the Watcher in the Water or a Goblin Mercenary Captain? (Matched Play Guide, p.27)

A: In these situations, the Hero chosen to be the Champion will deploy as described in the Scenario, rather than using their special rules for arriving later.

Q: In Scenarios where the amount of Victory Points varies depending on a model's position, what happens if a model would meet the conditions for multiple scoring conditions? For example: in Seize the Prizes, if a model holding treasure is in between both halves of the board, how many VPs does it score? Or, in the Retrieval Scenario, if the model carrying the Objective is only partially within my Deployment Zone, how many Victory Points would I score? (Matched Play Guide, p.31 & 32)

A: When determining Victory Points, you always score the most points that you are eligible for. Using Seize the Prizes as an example, if a model was holding an Objective Marker and their base was overlapping both your and your opponent's board halves, they are within your opponent's half of the board, meaning you would score 3 Victory Points rather than 2 Victory Points. Similarly, in Retrieval, if a model carrying the Objective was partially within your deployment zone, you would score 9 Victory Points. However, if a Scenario requires a model to be wholly within an area, such as in Storm the Camp, then that model's base must be wholly within the specified area in order to score.

Q: In Legolas' Deadly Shot special rule, does the 'so long as he has the Infantry keyword' caveat apply only to the 'not suffering the -1 penalty To Hit for Moving and Shooting' part of the rule, or also to the 'being allowed to make shooting attacks whilst Engaged in Combat' part of the rule? (Armies of The Lord of the Rings, p.14)

A: This caveat only applies to the not suffering the -1 penalty To Hit for Moving and Shooting. Legolas may still make shooting attacks whilst Engaged in Combat if he is mounted.

Q: Can Boromir use the Protect the Little Ones! special rule if Frodo is wearing the One Ring and is the only friendly Hobbit model within 3"? (Armies of The Lord of the Rings, p.16)

A: Yes.

Q: In the Road to Rivendell Army List, can Arwen use Bill the Pony as a Banner when Frodo is riding as a passenger on Asfaloth? (Armies of The Lord of the Rings, p.17 & 87)

A: No.

Q: If Merry and Pippin are riding into battle on Treebeard, and Treebeard is hit by a power such as Wrath of Bruinen, are they also hit by it? What happens when Treebeard is knocked Prone? (Armies of The Lord of the Rings, p.24)

A: The Merry & Pippin rule states that they cannot be targeted individually by Magical Powers, and so they won't be targeted - they would not suffer a hit from Wrath of Bruinen. If Treebeard is knocked Prone, Merry and Pippin will count as being Knocked Flying, as per the result on the Thrown Rider Chart (see p.70 of The Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game Rules Manual).

Q: If a Monster model uses the Rend Brutal Power Attack against Olwyn, who has the Stalwart Fighter special rule, what happens? (Armies of The Lord of the Rings, p.41)

A: As the Monster is not making Strikes, the special rule will have no effect.

Q: In the Road to Helm's Deep Army List, if Gimli is taken as a Passenger on Legolas' horse can he also lead a Warband? (Armies of The Lord of the Rings, p.93)

A: No.

Q: In the Road to Helm's Deep Army List, can Háma benefit from the Back on your horses special rule as he cannot normally have a horse? (Armies of The Lord of the Rings, p.93)

A: No.

Q: Can a Spectre's "A fell light is in them", or the King of the Dead's Visions of Terror, or a similar special rule be used to Move a model that is already engaged in combat? (Armies of The Lord of the Rings, p.115 & 156)

A: No.

Q: If Pippin or Merry are taken as passengers in the Defenders of the Pelennor Army List, can they declare a free Heroic Combat while they are passengers? (Armies of The Lord of the Rings, p.116)

A: No - as per the Passenger rules (p.135 of The Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game Rules Manual), they cannot contribute to a Combat in any way.

Q: When Gwaihir uses the Piercing Cry special rule, is it the models that are within 6" of him when he declares the use of this rule, or the models within 6" of him when they activate, that are affected? (Armies of The Lord of the Rings, p.133)

A: Only the models that are within 6" of Gwaihir when they are activated. Models that are within 6" of Gwaihir when he declares the use of the rule, but are not within 6" when they activate because Gwaihir has since Moved, are not affected.

Q: If I take a Rohan King of Men in the Realms of Men Army List, can I include Rohirrim Traitors in the army? (Armies of The Lord of the Rings, p.134)

A: No.

Q: In a Realms of Men Army List, what Heroic Tier are other Hero models included in the Army? (Armies of The Lord of the Rings, p.134)

A: Any Hero models included in the Army, with the exception of Kings of Men, will be classed as Heroes of Fortitude. This does not apply to Siege Veterans, who will remain as Minor Heroes.

Q: Does the Crown of Morgul prevent a model benefitting from the Stand Fast of a friendly Hero? (Armies of The Lord of the Rings, p.141)

A: No.

Q: If Shelob is included as part of the Cirith Ungol Army List and eats one friendly model does she gain bonuses for both "She is always hungry" and Swift Hunter? (Armies of The Lord of the Rings, p.146 & 215)

A: Yes.

Q: Can Shelob use her She is Always Hungry special rule on a model that is Engaged in Combat? (Armies of The Lord of the Rings, p.146)

A: Yes.

Q: Can Shagrat use his "Hands off the shiny shirt; that's mine!" special rule to gain possession of an Objective from a friendly model that is Engaged in Combat? (Armies of The Lord of the Rings, p.147)

A: Yes.

Q: If a Hero declares a Heroic Move, Heroic March or Heroic Shoot whilst in range of multiple models with the Whips of the Masters special rule, do they get to roll a D6 for each of these models, or just a single D6 regardless of the number of models with this special rule they are in range of? (Armies of The Lord of the Rings, p.149)

A: A single D6, regardless of the number of models with the Whips of the Masters special rule the Hero is in range of.

Q: When a Mordor/Isengard Warg Rider dismounts, what wargear does it get to keep? (Armies of The Lord of the Rings, p.151 & 171)

A: The wargear a Mordor/Isengard Warg Rider is allowed to keep will depend on the wargear they had whilst mounted, as described below:

  • Mordor/Isengard Warg Rider with shield and throwing spears → Mordor/Isengard Orc Warrior with shield.
  • Mordor/Isengard Warg Rider with Orc bow → Mordor/Isengard Orc Warrior with Orc bow.
  • Mordor/Isengard Warg Rider with shield → Mordor/Isengard Orc Warrior with shield.
  • Mordor/Isengard Warg Rider with throwing spears → Mordor/Isengard Orc Warrior with spear.

Q: Do Wargs and Fell Wargs that become separated Mounts gain the Beast keyword? (Armies of The Lord of the Rings, p.151; Armies of Middle-earth, p. 104)

A: Yes

Q: How does the Mordor Uruk-Hai Cleaving Blow special rule work in cases where you need to roll a 6+ followed by a further dice? (Armies of The Lord of the Rings, p.154)

A: It will trigger if either of the dice rolled are a natural 6.

Q: If a Hero within 6" of Gríma Wormtongue declares a free Heroic Action, does the Wormtongue special rule increase the cost of that Hero model's Heroic Action? (p.160). (Armies of The Lord of the Rings)

A: No. In the case of a free Heroic Action, no Might points are expended to declare the Action, and so Gríma's ability does not increase the cost.

Q: What happens with Gríma Wormtongue's A Traitor Within special rule if he is taken in an Army that does not include Saruman? (Armies of The Lord of the Rings, p.160)

A: If Gríma is taken in an Army that does not include Saruman, then he must be deployed as part of the enemy Army and will begin the game already revealed and is treated as a normal enemy model - just as if Saruman had been wounded.

Q: If Gríma Wormtongue is forced to charge because of a Magical Power or special rule, whilst benefiting from his A Traitor Within special rule, is he revealed? (Armies of The Lord of the Rings, p.160)

A: Yes.

Q: How does Gríma Wormtongue's A Traitor Within special rule work in Scenarios where Warbands enter the battlefield, such as Reconnoitre or those that use Maelstrom of Battle? (Armies of The Lord of the Rings, p.160)

A: If you wish to deploy Gríma with an enemy Warband in these instances, you must select the Warband at the start of

Q: When using the Conjure Lightning ability of the Army of the White Hand Army List, can Saruman use Might to change To Wound Rolls? (Armies of The Lord of the Rings, p.219)

A: No.

Q: When Saruman uses the Summon Gale special rule in the Army of the White Hand, it halves the Move Value of enemy models until the end of the turn. How far would Gimli, who has a Move Value of 5" be able to Move that turn? (Armies of The Lord of the Rings, p.219)

A: Whenever a Characteristic is halved by a special rule, it is always rounded up. So, in the given example, Gimli would be able to Move 3".

Q: The Champions of Erebor have the Sworn Protector (Thorin) Special Rule, does this apply to both Thorin Oakenshield and Thorin III Stonehelm, depending on the Army they have been included in? (Armies of The Hobbit, p.33)

A: Yes.

Q: If Bard or Girion are upgraded to take a Windlance, and also have a Warband, how does the Warband deploy in Scenarios that use the Maelstrom of Battle special rule? (Armies of The Hobbit, p.43 & 53)

A: The Siege Engine will be deployed first following the normal rules for deploying a Siege Engine in a Scenario using Maelstrom of Battle. The Warband will then be deployed within 6" of either Bard or Girion; however, every model in the Warband must be wholly within 6" of the edge of the board.

(Armies of The Hobbit, p.64)

A: This caveat only applies to the not suffering the -1 penalty To Hit for Moving and Shooting. Legolas may still make shooting attacks whilst Engaged in Combat if he is mounted. HOBBIT™

Q: If Beorn the Bear uses the Barge Brutal Power Attack, does he have to charge if able to because of the Berserk special rule? (Armies of The Hobbit, p.77)

A: Yes

Q: If, in an Erebor Reclaimed army, Bofur is upgraded with a Troll Brute, can the army still benefit from the "To the King!" special rule? (Armies of The Hobbit, p.89)

A: No - it no longer includes only Infantry Hero models, so does not meet the requirements.

Q: Do Gwaihir or a Great Eagle Mount for Radagast count towards the number of Great Eagles in your Army when working out how many Fledgeling Great Eagles you can take? (Armies of The Hobbit, p.109)

A: Gwaihir does not count towards the number of Great Eagles as he does not use the Great Eagle profile. If Radagast takes a Great Eagle as a Mount, this will count towards the number of Great Eagles taken.

Q: Do Wargs and Fell Wargs that become separated Mounts gain the Beast keyword? (Armies of The Hobbit, p.116)

A: Yes

Q: If a Nazgûl of Dol Guldur is resurrected via their Unholy Resurrection special rule, do any Might, Will and Fate Points that were spent remain spent? (Armies of The Hobbit, p.130)

A: Yes.

Q: If a Nazgûl of Dol Guldur is slain by an Elf bow, do they suffer a -1 penalty when rolling for the Unholy Resurrection rule? (Armies of The Hobbit, p.130)

A: Yes. The rules for Elven weapons (page 106 of The Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game Rules Manual) state that "Any weapon with the word 'Elf' in its name is automatically considered to be an Elven weapon." As an Elf bow has the word Elf in its name, it is an Elven weapon, which applies the -1 modifier.

Q: After successfully Trampling a Nazgûl of Dol Guldur, does a War Beast continue to Trample or stop at the Unholy Resurrection marker? (Armies of The Hobbit, p.130)

A: In this example, although the Nazgûl would not be removed as a casualty, they are still slain - therefore the War Beast would continue to Trample.

Q: Is the Three Trolls' Campfire Open Ground, Impassable or something else? (Armies of The Hobbit, p.157)

A: The Campfire is treated like an Objective Marker, though it doesn't actually count as one for Scenario objectives (see p.157 of the The Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game Rules Manual).

Q: What rules are affected by Bofur's Steadfast special rule? (Armies of The Hobbit)

A: If a model is directly affected by a special rule, then they can attempt to ignore its effects via Steadfast. These can be special rules that directly target Bofur, such as the War Bat's Pluck special rule. It can also be rules that indirectly target them, such as the bonus of +1 To Wound effect from a War Bat's Piercing Talons or the ability for Azog To Wound on a natural 3+ via his I am the Master special rule. It does not ignore rules that benefit an enemy model but don't directly affect the model. For example, Steadfast cannot ignore a Hunter Orc Warriors' Savage Hunters special rule, even if that model will be making Strikes against a model benefiting from Steadfast - only the Hunter Orc is affected, even if the end result is more dice rolled against your model! Similarly, rules such as The Three Trolls' Kitchen Utensils cannot be ignored, as it is the Trolls that are re-rolling any dice of a natural 1. The Steadfast Roll is made when a special rule is triggered. For example, you would only test if Steadfast allows a model to ignore the Harbinger of Evil (X) rule when they take a Courage Test while within range. The benefits of Steadfast only apply for that test as well - the next Courage Test would require another Steadfast Roll. The Steadfast rule does not negate a special rule - it simply means the model ignores its effect. So a War Bat would still Similarly, it only allows a model to ignore the parts of a rule that affect them, not the entire rule. For example, Steadfast will allow a model to attempt to ignore the part of the Pits of Dol Guldur Surprise Attack which stops models from declaring Heroic Moves. If the Steadfast Roll is successful, that model can declare Heroic Moves but it does not stop Azog's controlling player from winning Priority; all other models you control must have each separately passed a Steadfast Roll to be able to declare Heroic moves. Lastly, Steadfast does not apply to every rule - for example, it cannot be used against Strikes. If in doubt, look for a big header that says 'Special Rules' above the rule you are hoping to negate.

Q: If a Knight of Dol Amroth is within 6" of two Dol Amroth Heroes that have charged, do they benefit from multiple +1 bonuses To Wound? (Armies of Middle-earth, p.85)

A: No. Unless explicitly stated, multiple instances of the same rule are not cumulative. In the above example, the Knight of Dol Amroth would only gain a +1 bonus To Wound. Another example is the Drums in the Deep special rule; a Moria Goblin model cannot benefit from multiple instances of it, no matter how many Moria Goblin Drums you have.

Q: When does the Charge of Gondor special rule take effect? (Armies of Middle-earth, p.93)

A: Once a Gondor Cavalry model has charged, they gain the benefit of this rule for the rest of turn. So, for rules such as Eärnur's Master Duellist, he will be Fv 7 before he can potentially increase it at the start of a Combat.

Q: When are the Dwarven Mirrors in the Khazad-dûm Army List deployed in Scenarios that do not have deployment zones? (Armies of Middle-earth, p.95)

A: Before players roll for the Initial Priority. Middle-earth, The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings and the names

Q: When playing a Scenario using the Dark of Night special rule, does a Dragon's Breathe Fire only gain the +1 To Wound against the initial target, or everyone that is hit by the attack? (Armies of Middle-earth, p.122)

A: Only the initial target. Other affected models are then Set Ablaze, so if they were wounded it would not be by a shooting attack, but by the Set Ablaze special rule.

Q: What happens when a Dragon's Fire Breath hits a Cavalry model? (Armies of Middle-earth, p.122)

A: The Dragon treats their Breathe Fire as a bow; when shooting at a Cavalry model, they would randomise between the Mount, the rider and any passengers. Any other parts of the model not struck by the initial hit would then be Set Ablaze.

Q: Does Brôrgir regain Will from his Sorcerous Adept special rule when using Heroic Channeling? (Armies of Middle-earth, p.144 )

A: No, a Hero that declares a Heroic Channeling will count the result of their next Casting Test that turn as a 6, not a Natural 6.

Q: Where does the Great Eye Marker deploy in Scenarios that don't have a specific deployment zone, such as Reconnoitre or those that use the Maelstrom of Battle special rule? (Armies of Middle-earth, p.160)

A: In these instances, the Great Eye Marker will be deployed touching its controlling player's board edge. In Maelstrom of Battle scenarios, determine which board edge is the controlling player's in the same manner as if they had a Siege Engine as described on page 139 of the Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game Rules Manual.

Rules Manual

  • Page 64 - Mount
  • Add the following to the end of the paragraph:
  • A Mount that is also a Hero cannot declare Heroic Actions.

  • Page 90 - Barge

  • Change the final sentence of the first paragraph to read:
  • Models may still Make Way for losing models (which will be decided by the Monster model's controlling player) and, if they do, may Back Away up to 3" rather than usual 1", in a direction chosen by the Monster model's controlling player. When a model Makes Way in this manner, it will only do so the minimum amount it needs to in order to allow the model Backing Away to Back Away 3"; it won't be forced to Make Way a full 3" if only Making Way 1" would suffice to allow the Barged model to Back Away 3", for example, and won't be automatically knocked Prone if it is able to Make Way the required amount.

  • Page 91 - Hurl

  • Change the first sentence in bullet point 4 to:
  • The Hurled model suffers two Strength 6 hits (if it is a Cavalry model then both rider and Mount will suffer these hits), and if it was a Cavalry model then it is also Knocked Flying unless either the rider and/or Mount have a Strength of 6 or higher.

  • Page 97 - War Beasts - Immovable Object

  • Add the following to the end of the paragraph:
  • A War Beast is completely unaffected by special rules that would prevent it from Activating, moving its full Move Value, or that would attempt to Move it.

  • Page 36 - Escort the Wounded - Scoring Victory Points

  • Change the first bullet point to read:
  • You score 2 Victory Points for each of your wounded allies that is in base contact with a friendly model, and no enemy models, in your opponent's board half. For each wounded ally that has been rescued, you instead score 4 Victory Points.

  • Page 36 - Escort the Wounded - Wounded Allies

  • Change the third sentence to read:
  • If, during the End Phase of any turn, a friendly model is in base contact with a wounded ally and both the model and wounded ally are wholly within a friendly Sanctuary, the wounded ally is removed from the battlefield and has been rescued.

Armies of The Lord of the Rings

  • Page 14 - Legolas Greenleaf - Deadly Shot
  • Replace the second and third sentences with the following:
  • Additionally, Legolas may still make shooting attacks whilst he is Engaged in Combat if there are no other friendly models engaged in the same combat, and does not suffer the -1 penalty To Hit for Moving and Shooting so long as he has the Infantry keyword. If Legolas shoots whilst he is Engaged in Combat, he may shoot at enemy models he is Engaged in Combat with, and does not need to make In The Way Tests for shooting at models he is Engaged in Combat with (though they may still block Line of Sight as normal).

  • Page 24 - Treebeard - Merry & Pippin

  • Change the third sentence to:
  • Merry and Pippin are treated as Passengers (though this will not give Treebeard either the Cavalry or Mount keywords), with the exception that they cannot be targeted individually by shooting attacks, Magical Powers, or special rules, and Strikes cannot be made against them in Combat.

  • Page 160 - Gríma Wormtongue - A Traitor Within

  • Change the fourth paragraph to read:
  • Whilst Gríma is considered a friendly model, he does not have a Control Zone and may ignore the Control Zones of enemy models and may Move through enemy models as if they weren't there. When Gríma Moves this way, he cannot end his Move overlapping or in base contact with an enemy model. Additionally, whilst Gríma is considered a friendly model, enemy models may Move through Gríma in the same manner as described above. Gríma can choose to Charge an enemy model as normal if he wishes.

  • Page 160 - Gríma Wormtongue - A Traitor Within

  • Change the fifth paragraph to read:
  • These restrictions immediately end if Saruman suffers an unsaved Wound, if Gríma Charges an enemy model, if Gríma destroys an enemy Siege Engine, or if Gríma interacts with an Objective Marker (such as destroying a Supply Marker or picking up an objective), at which point Gríma is treated as a normal enemy model and can be Charged, shot and slain like any other model. Additionally, Gríma can never be chosen as a target in Scenarios that require players to select friendly or enemy Hero models, such as Fog of War or Assassination.
